Theater as Esperanto on Krakow streets - ULICA festival

I was pulling the luggage, looking for the hostel address. One girl was trying to repeat the movements of showman at the square and people were laughing and enjoying. That was my first impression of International Street Theater Festival - Ulica.

This day I saw three shows. Jay, guy from South Korea was joggling and making tricks, almost without a word.  When I ask him what he thinks if it is easy to connect with audience and if we could talk about some social issues on the scene, he told me the best way to talk is to talk by emotions.

The next two shows were from Russia and Kazakhstan. And all of them had two common things - they were almost without words and they were interrupted by "audience" side. Firstly, guy with almost naked ass and without t-shirt came to congratulate to Jay. Than some guy came to the scene and started to rolling, before the Russian show. And some flying object came directly to the scene of theater from Kazakhstan.  5 years ago, as a member of student theater, I was performing on street festival in my city when some children were throwing small rocks on the scene. We survived. And won first prize.

Next day, on Sunday, I wanted to watch show Big Brothers from France and trying to find out where the scene was. Than, I saw four very tall men walking and realized that it is not on one place, but show was happening all around. Seeing me, who wanted to document this by my camera, they decided to come closer. These prying eyes, so close to my face, made me screaming and laughing in the same time.

My laugh therapy continued at Mr. Tartuffo show from Chile. Oh, my God! Guys from the audience were helping him to get on unicycle and dancing on his instructions. Simply hilarious. Some of us, afraid from height, were openmouthed watching this. Measure of trust, which he had to these complete strangers is just added to my "relationship goals" list.

After laugh therapy I caught the bus, to watch Pelegrinus, show of  Teatr KTO, the host of this festival. I missed the station, going back to find Rynek Podgorski and wriggle a bit trough people to catch the show. It was worth it. At the end I had chance to speak with Jerzy Zon, the director of the show and artistic director of the festival. More about this will be published soon.

Pelegrinus - Teatr KTO Krakow

The festival was closed by jazz orchestra Orchestre International du Vetex from Belgium, but with sound from different countries - Sweden, Italy, France...one music journey trough Europe.

Closing concert

I am sorry that I could catch more of this event. But **it happens (and flights are being canceled sometimes) when you travel by low cost companies.

Some of these shows made me laughing, some of them made me thinking. At the end, all of them reach the same point - the common language between continents could be found without words (even easier than with them). Theater is Esperanto of these people!

It's truth that I didn't meet many people in Krakow who heard for Ulica. But these one who did, they were sitting on the ground, some of them even prepared the pads and pillows, ready for the show and involved in the story. It was an amazing image. And I am afraid that always be someone who will disturb theater world. And world in general. But, make the magic on the scene be stronger than disturbia. Make disturbers skip the wall if they want to enter our worlds. And pass security control before.

On Monday small tents for artists preparations were moved and no more improvised scenes were around. But the squares of Kracow keep resonating with the horse gallop, street musicians, and stories of tourist guides. The city didn't fall asleep.
